I have worked as an elementary school counselor at 2 different schools, was 2012 Elementary Counselor of the Year, and am a Nationally Board Certified School Counselor. I have degrees in Communication, Psychology, and post-graduate work in Counseling. I seek out professional development every year and am always working to learn and improve my skills. I am a member of the American School Counseling Association, Louisiana School Counselor Association, and Calcasieu Counselors' Association.
The Role of the School Counselor
Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. School counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success. The professional elementary school counselor holds a master’s degree and required state certification in school counseling. Maintaining certification includes on-going professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today’s students. Professional association membership enhances the school counselor’s knowledge and effectiveness.
Counselor services include many different kinds of support, such as:
One-on-one parent conferencing, education and support for students with special needs, communication and networking with other schools and the community, support and education for school staff about mental health topics, coordination of schoolwide testing and interpretation of assessment results, coordination of special ed referrals, organization of activities and special events like Red Ribbon Week, academic support, individual student counseling, crisis interventions, career education, and referrals to community agencies and counseling services as appropriate.
How Does a Student See Mrs. White?
There are 4 ways for students to visit with the school counselor:
1) A student can let their teacher know that they would like to see the counselor and they will notify me. I normally speak with students in the afternoons when their core academic subjects are finished for the day unless the student is in crisis.
2) A teacher may refer a student to me because of concerns related to academics, behavior, or emotional concerns.
3) A parent can call and request that I speak with their child about specific concerns.
4)A child can refer themselves to me via the contact form
Confidentiality in the School Setting
Counseling in the school setting, although typically brief, constitues a counseling relationship. The information that is shared between a student and myself is kept private and confidential except in the following circumstances:
1) Permission
A student gives me permission to speak with their teacher or parent about the information the have shared.
2) Threat of Harm
The student is in danger of harming himself or others
3) Child Abuse
A child makes statements about being injured by another person or witnessing the injury of another person, or there are visible injuries that appear to be related to child abuse.
If any of these situations arise in the course of counseling with a student I will follow the legal guidelines for mandatory reporting.
